He wrinkles his nose. "Agreed."
Out in the main room, he answers her questions: "Anything willing to come up out of that tunnel with that pickling water smell wafting down it is something we should bring back up for. But the tunnel doesn't look like it goes down; just out. My guess is it slips past the wall, nothing fancy."
Fletcher idly tries to dust himself off, not being especially trusting of the mysterious, magical powder that clings to them now. "It'd dry a lot faster if we brought it out in the open, but the thing's heavy enough I doubt we could lift it, and the townsfolk would probably be as horrified as you or I to find a pickled corpse in the streets."

"True enough.... Looked like this place was looted pretty thoroughly before I got here. And no one had found that cellar before, I could tell that as much. Suppose we can just bury it back under the refuse, probably won't be bothered."
Velira takes out one of the scrolls to look at it. "I'll wait until I've retrieved the books before casting to read these, in case those are written in something arcane too. Been more focused on my fighting skills lately, so my arcane is not as advanced as it should be. Limited energy for spells." Velira grins a little at Fletcher. "How long do you think we should wait?"

The reddish-pink colored dust doesn't seem to rub off, probably some sort of mechanism to reveal the thief.

Fletcher nods, and frowns when the dust doesn't come off. "Hn." Though he is distracted by it, he recovers quickly enough, looking at Velira with newfound interest. "Ah, so you'll be the same elf I heard went after the goblins, recently? Heard you and the ogre were involved."
As to her question about time, he shrugs. "It's probably settled by now." To test that theory, he returns to the kitchen and opens the trap door, stepping down to investigate. It does appear to be clear again, so he steps aside to let Velira pass and investigate the drawer. Meantime, he checks the cask. If there's no spigot to drain it already, he'll un-seal it again and wait for Velira to make her exit.

Velira heads down to retrieve the books and wand, and check the shelves.

The three other casks have spigots, but the one with the corpse in it does not.
The smoke has dissipated from the room, leaving it clear enough to see once more.

Back at the desk, Velira picks up the 2 books and the wand and puts them in her bag. She checks the shelves for anything interesting and then decides to take a quick look in the tunnel to see if she sees anything.

Fletcher growls and turns the cask on its side, waiting to unseal it until Velira has finished her search and exited to the upstairs.

The bookshelves hold a myriad of basic texts on various schools of magic, many of which Velira has already read. The texts seem startling skewed towards necromancy, however.
The tunnel is empty, requires crawling to enter, and heads vaguely south and up.

Velira shrugs off her curiosity of the tunnel and heads out to the main cellar room where Fletcher is ready to begin with the cast.
"I'll be upstairs looking over these books and scrolls in the main room of the hut. Come up and join me when you are done draining the cask and I'll let you know if I find anything of importance.
One thing to note, most of the books on the shelves were basic arcane knowledge, but almost everything dealt with necromancy. I am thinking that Kaine may not have been the "wizard" everyone thought he was, but a warlock. Given that, take care with that corpse, in case there are any hidden surprises."
Velira heads upstairs to examine the books.

Just before Fletcher can empty the cask he hears Velira yell "wait!". "Forgot something" she calls to him as she races past him and into the side room. She comes back out carrying an armful of the books from the shelves.
"No sense wasting good books. I'll see if Sethel can use these at the library." She says in passing as she heads back upstairs.

Upstairs, Velira looks at the scrolls and the books, she notices immediately the books are journals, nothing arcane about them. She shrugs to herself, was probably too much to ask they be spellbooks.
She puts the 2 scrolls back in her bag, she'll read those later to see what they do, maybe she'll get lucky and find a new spell or two.
She clears a small spot on the floor free from debris and sits down to start reading the journals. Maybe she'll find something useful for the investigation into the corpse.

The journals are in some sort of mad cypher. All Velira can tell is that it's definitely not magical in nature.

Velira finding the books are coded (appears to be same code as the misc papers she grabbed?) turns the books over to Fletcher.
"These are coded with some form of cipher I can not understand. Please give these to the Watch for evidence. If the Watch can employ someone to decipher these they may give some clues to what took place or where Kaine went. If I am able to obtain a read spell that allows me to understand the cipher, I'll test on these loose pages first, before the watch can have the books translated, I'll check in to assist. Wish I could have been more assistance today."
