Fletcher nods, and motions for her to go ahead while he lights the torch. He follows her down into the cellar, and waits for Velira to point out the cask containing the body.
The light flickers and dances, and the smoke quickly begins making the already stuffy atmosphere of the hut even less pleasant.
Belatedly, he says in an undertone, "Sorry to hear about your brother."

Velira points to the cask on the left, "Body is in there, rest are empty. The top should be loose enough to remove by hand. I didn't disturb the contents, so do not know if anything else in in the barrel also."
"Door over here is locked. I'll wait on using detect magic until you're ready."

Fletcher hands over his torch briefly-- "If you don't mind?" --and proceeds to un-seal the cask, checking the body and the pickling fluid it is suspended in. The smell is overwhelmingly awful, and the body is clearly female. Kaine's missing wife, then; what little can be said about the body is that it has been here for over a year, possibly several.
If she was reported missing, it's probably been too long to figure out where she came from. He reseals the cask, and retrieves his torch; aside from a grim scowl, he doesn't comment on the contents thereof.
Instead, he gestures to the locked door. "Go ahead; I'm ready."

Velira pauses to get her crowbar out of her pack and hand Fletcher back his torch.
"Once I cast, if the door is not magically sealed, I'll need to open the door quickly before the detect spell fades so I can see if anything additionally is magical is inside."
*Velira casts Detect Magic*

The door itself does not radiate magic and is too thick to reveal any magical emanations from beyond.

Velira attempts to open door with crowbar. [dice=6][rand=141554614802699042914824166252322735299197613800434291594789201785]

With ease, Velira pries the door entirely off the hinges with her crowbar!
Beyond the doorway is a relatively small room, only 20 feet square, with two bookshelfs and a writing desk. In addition, the stones of the south wall, near the ceiling, all appear to be loose.

[ooc: Since looking into room is my second "round" after casting, detect magic was sill active on that, yes? If so, was anything detected?]

The writing desk glows with a fairly strong magical aura. The longer Velira looks at it, the more convinced she is of both conjuration and enchantment auras emanating from either inside the desk or the desk itself.

"There are strong magical auras coming from the desk. Bookshelves show nothing magical. Also seeing loose stones in south wall near ceiling, but nothing magical there."
Velira steps into room, wanting to take a closer look at the south wall. She looks to see if this could be a blocked cubby hole or if it looks like a structural issue.

It appears to be bricks stacked in a feeble attempt to cover a tunnel or something similar.

"The bricks over here looks to be covering up a hole, possibly a storage nook or tunnel." Velira turns back to Fletcher.
"Should we search the shelves and desk first before we try it?"

"I'll check the stones; you handle the desk." So saying, he moves to investigate the indicated loose stones, pulling at them a bit. As is common lately, he is beset with a headache and almost a dull echo of determined anger that feels achingly familiar.
He can't imagine when he would have needed to pull the stones out of a wall recently. Or ever. None the less, he sees if he can pry these away and whether there's anything else of note.

All of the stones pull away easily, revealing a small tunnel that can be crawled into. The tunnel appears to head south and upward. Possibly an escape route?

Fletcher's headache grows worse a moment, but he steps away from the tunnel to see what Velira has found and wills it to leave him be.
"Well?"
