Dantalis goes to the merchants guild asking around if anyone knows the depth of stone and dirt in the flat lands around sweetgrove and if making a small personal stone mine to use for building a small house and farm compound would be a possible thing to do

Land in the same hex as Sweetgrove (within 3 miles) costs 50gp per acre(roughly 200ft x 200ft)
You can't build a domain in Sweetgrove's hex, but you are free to do anything else you want with your land(build a farm/house, start digging a hole, whatever!)

So how far is a half to a quarter days ride? And would it be possible to build four or five miles out and how much would that cost?

Depends on what you're riding and how encumbered it is. A light riding horse can travel 48 miles in an 8 hour ride(a day's travel), that's crossing an entire 6 mile hex every hour, basically! Building outside of Sweetgrove's hex is free, but you have to clear the land yourself. As you can see from the map, 1 hex away from Sweetgrove is mostly grassland, with the forest directly south. Sweetgrove isn't EXACTLY in the middle of its hex, since it's very close to the river. Basically, if I were being more exact, Sweetgrove is on the western edge of the hex that it's in, and the river would be further a little further east, but the map is just for estimating travel times. To clear a hex, you'll have to root out any monster/humanoid lairs and clear them out, then you'll have to establish a stronghold and garrison it with troops to make sure that it "stays clear". If you don't do this, the workers who come to construct your building won't be protected and could be attacked. That's not to say that this couldn't happen in Sweetgrove's hex either, since there's no military presence outside the city walls, but it's less likely!(Take the farmers raided by goblins, for example)

ok then Dantalis's next task will be to clear the forest hex across the bridge from sweetgrove and to start his construction there to utilize the wood as well and to see how deep he has to dig to get to solid stone usefull for housing and cave networks or an under village type of thing

I'll set something up in the near future then, I have to roll up some monster lairs and determine certain other things. If you want to quarry stone, that should be no problem anywhere. I'd estimate between 20 and 100 feet down to reach rock in most places, but it could be deeper depending on the terrain.
A dwarf advancing into the forest and cutting up trees for his project may find some backlash from certain Nature groups in the setting, though, so be prepared!

I'm not getting rid of hexes in the area surrounding Sweetgrove. I just won't use them on the bigger maps that show what's north, west, south and east of the Southern Reaches region.
