((OOC: Gotcha, so waylay/backstab are both one time actions. I was thinking that it was a hide in shadows -> waylay/backstab, and since I"m perm-shadow right now, I could perma-waylay/backstab. Thanks for clearing everything up. Also, if Polliver took 27 damage and didn't die, I'm fucking terrified right now.))

3rd round results (I accidentally posted 2nd round)
Hunters go first!
Polliver completely misses Avarice but shoots an arrow completely through Merrith, dropping him from 6 to -3. He collapses and begins to bleed from his wounds.
Hunter1 misses Merrick, Hunter2 hits Lokiin dropping her from 4 to 0, she passes out from the pain and begins to bleed.
Hunter3 hits Avarice and Hunter4 hits Avarice. Avarice takes 4 points of damage and drops from 1 to -3, falling unconscious.
Merrick then attacks Polliver and misses with his mace.
Merrick rolls morale: [dice=6] [dice=6][rand=806061929448079828064845527919127405509155534374300245534174164]

((OOC: wow. So no magic shield saves for my worthless party? I mean, I just looked over their roles.... they all deserved to die. Oh well. Thanks, that shit was a blast! One last question - Who the Fuck is Polliver, and why does he have more hitpoints than my entire squad?!? What is he based off of? Is he one of the hidden lvl 9 NPC's floating around town? Figures I would challenge Jesus to a fight my first time out lol. Guess that means I'll have to send another Alasorai to the Wednesday game... The House will be wondering what happened, or maybe they'll send an ally to Avarice, only to find he didn't make it. I'll think about it.))

NPCs don't get to splinter shields anymore than they get to use the big d30 rule. They also can't write session summaries to gain experience. On the other hand, they ARE subject to the crit/fumbles rule, the dead at -10 hp rule, and the non-vancian spellcasting rule.
Polliver's definitely not 9th level, but he is a mid-level NPC. He's currently the highest level Malar-worshipper in the region. The second highest one is a secret(but some people already guessed, so maybe not that secret!) Level 9 is "name level" in this version of D&D, and it's when people start attracting followers to their side and basically become domain rulers. A queen or similar ruler might be level 9+, for example!
Over all, this was an excellent interaction and I'm excited about how you'll handle the follow up, but please don't say things like "their rolls were so bad, they deserved to die." These NPCs all had playable rolls, some of them better than what some PCs have, and I don't want those players to feel discouraged.

Oh, I didn't mean their stats, Danny. I meant their actual attack roles! Like Jacinth shooting 0-2, and Merrick's big miss on his initial axe attack, plus Lokiin's whiff on her initial sneak attack. The retainers were VERY playable, the virtual dice gods just weren't with them today. I mean, if the rolls they had and the rolls the "hunters" had switched, it would have been a massacre. If anything, it was my fault for not understanding the rules prior to engaging the enemies. Knowing that I can't waylay the way that I thought that I could changes the entire way that I approached the skirmish. I would have blinded Polliver so that he wasn't able to attack and then focused on the minions until the numbers were more in my favor to take him head on, or lay him out. Speaking of which, if I blinded him, would I have then been able to waylay him? If not, I'm not sure I like the mechanic of it. To me, it's an unexpected attack, meaning I couldn't engage an enemy and then try to waylay it, but that if I dispatched an enemy and another one wasn't focusing on me, I could waylay it as a first attack. It's not a game-ender or anything, just changes the way that I'd handle him during combat. I'd bring invis potions everywhere, so that I could effectively contribute. Shit, I'd have taken my first turn to invis instead of to cast darkness if I'd realized that I could even be targeted once it happened. Didn't realize that the penalty was only a -4 for ranged. That doesn't seem like much considering that they all had bonuses to hit like PCs instead of static stats like the enemies in the book. That's what was throwing me off during the fight... didn't realize that's how you treated enemies. Like I said, it's all good and in no way did I mean to insinuate that they were flawed from a creation standpoint... just saying they performed far below my expectations once everything kicked off.

Glad to hear that that's what you meant! The rolls were definitely unfortunate. I like your idea to go with invisibility potions in the future!
The important thing to keep in mind is that the enemy must be unaware of you for you to use waylay or backstab.

The day. He's looking for the bag, or the tracks of whoever may have the bag, and which way they go.

Avarice searches all over the docks and doesn't find the bag anywhere.

And unfortunately, he can't figure out which set of tracks to follow, but the vast majority of tracks that seem likely all end at the riverbank.

((OOC: DAMNIT!!))
Avarice looks across the river to see if there are boats somewhere on the otherside that seem likely means of crossing for the group/persons who may have the bag.

At the moment, river traffic is backed up due to the dangers to the south, so there's about 8 boats crammed around the limited pier-space here. Men and women are still heading to and fro, maintaining the boats and keeping the docks clean, while Black Ryan shouts commands.

Avarice approaches Black Ryan.
"Sir, I'm searching for a bag that was stolen from me by a group of Malarites led by Polliver. I'm not sure that they recovered it after they tried to take it, and I'm hoping that maybe one of your dockworkers found it and brought it to you. I assure you, though the items within the bag look vauable, they'll only bring the Malarites down on whoever has them. Have you heard anything?"
