Avarice stirs. His head is throbbing like he just got run over by a cart. Every muscle in his body is sore as if from a hard workout. Wet grass is the first thing he notices, then the trees all around him. It looks like a forest, and not just any forest, but specifically the forest west of Sweetgrove. It appears to be around midnight, judging from the position of the full moon.
In the distance, he can hear the sounds of hunting horns and the barking of hounds.
((This is one day later, Avarice has his armor on and all his weapons, but nothing else. He can use Darkness again, but not his once per session d30, and he's back to full health from some sort of naturalistic herbal healing. He's still got all the scars and wounds but they're packed with herbs and bandaged))

Avarice presses his palm to his head, trying to stop the throbbing inside of it. He takes a deep breath and stands up, careful to make little sound. He readies his warhammer, and starts moving through the forest, looking for a way to ambush his closest pursuers.

The sound of dogs barking gets closer. Avarice knows that while he can hide from the eyes of humans, he may have more difficulty with the noses of those hounds.
The forest is thick here and only gets thicker to the west. To the east, it appears to thin out some.

((OOC: Survival roll to determine which way the nearest water source is?))
Avarice profanes Malar and his followers several times, realizing that this is a matter of survival, not a time where he should be evening the odds... muttering more profanities about hounds and animals in general, he begins to sprint to the East where the forest thins out. While he runs, he tries to recall the region he's in and any topographical features that he might turn to his advantage against the force arrayed against him.

Avarice is pretty sure that he'll find water if he heads to lower ground.
The land slopes downward to the south and the trees also thin in that direction too.

Avarice heads towards the water, planning on masking his scent within the water and then re-assessing the situation. He's still trying to match up what he knows of the topography of the land with what he's seeing as he flees.

Avarice reaches a small creek that runs from east to west and is able to piece together that he seems to be deep in the forest. Probably at least 10 miles west of the river that runs beside Sweetgrove, and 10 miles south of the main western road.

Avarice heads into the creek, and then follows it East. After a mile or so he gets out of the creek on the opposite side and continues to follow the creek East, paying attention to signs of being tracked. As he continues East, he looks for a defensible poition, should it come to that.

As Avarice follows the creek, he can tell that the hounds' barking is getting further away. It'll be some time before they can regain the trail at this rate.

Defensible positions are not incredibly common out here along the river, but every so often, Avarice passes a tree that's a bit thicker than the rest. Thick enough to conceal his presence, if necessary.[rand=510630610412247496586676630987286584409464518358565664260967865]

The sounds of barking completely recedes. Avarice judges that the hunters went west at the creek. Before he can get too comfortable in these thoughts, he hears a rustling in a thicket 100 feet to the north.

Avarice approaches the thicket, readying his warhammer for a two handed strike. He approaches quietly, looking to execute an unsuspected strike.

One of the hunters from the previous night is all alone out here. He's bent over the ground, studying a set of animal tracks with a frown on his face. He has not noticed Avarice yet.

Avarice chops at his head with the warhammer, vengeance gleaming in his eyes.

Avarice easily connects, instantly knocking the man unconscious. The woods are relatively quiet, only the natural sounds of birds and other native fauna. The sound of the creek can still be heard from here.[rand=60723396544761830006269369857414553542162763578841530373125237509047]

Avarice searches the man for weapons and items. Once he's done, he waits for him to begin waking up. As the man gains consciousness, Avarice puts his hand over his mouth to keep him silent and whispers in his ear;
"You should have killed me when you had the chance. Now, I'll spend every moment of my life annihiliating everything that you hold dear. Where's Malar now? "
Avarice slits the man's throat from ear to ear. He continues to hold his mouth and stare into his eyes until the life is gone from them. Afterwards, he leaves a note to Polliver on the corpse written in the man's flesh. It reads:
"I still owe you much more than this, my dear Merchant. Be patient, I'll get to you when I've had my fun."
Avarice conceals the corpse within the thicket and continues East, stepping back into the creek for a mile or so before getting out of the creek and following alongside it.
